How to get around: The easiest and simplest way to get around Naples is on foot, or public transport, unless you have nerves of steel don't even think about driving yourself. The ANM bus service is rather slow busy, but most importantly reliable. There is an undergraound system in operations known as the Metropolitana, and there are three funiculars railways to take up the heights of Vomero. If you take a Taxi, ensure that the meter is on when your journey commences as charges can be rather a hit a miss affair, and the taxicabs themselves take longer than you would expect, due to the heavy traffic. Rail Service: Stazione Centrale, has train services between Brindizi, Milan & Rome, whilst Stazione Circumvesuviane just of Via Garibaldi have services to Pompeii and Sorrento. Naples City Information Ranked as being the third largest city in Italy, Naples the Capital city of Campania lies between the slopes of Vesuvius and the volcanic heights of Campi Flegerei, naturally it overlooks the bay which derives its name from this ancient city. It is now an important tourist venue as well as being and active commercial and industrial centre, and boast one of the more prominent Mediterranean Ports. Piazza del Municipio in the city centre is a busy traffic junction which stretches down to the waterfront, here the towering hulk of the Castel Nuovo dominates the skyline, this was was the residence of the Aragon Monarchs, just beyond the castle you will find the Teatro San Carlo which is the largest Opera House in all of Italy, near to here you will find the Hydrofoil station which links the city with Sorrento and Capri, and the Sazione Marritima and the cruise terminal. Stretching form the Piazza Plebiscito the Via Toledo (also known as the Via Roma) runs through the city centre, this routs leads to the National Archaeological Museum, here artefacts from the nearby Romans cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum can be viewed making it perhaps one of the most important places to visit in Naples Continuing to the top of the hill you will find the cities other major museum Palazzo Reale di Capodimonte. Once the former residence of the Bourbon King Charles the 3rd, this building now houses a superb collection of Renaissance paintings. Vomero, which is the district at the top of the hill overlooking the old city can be reached on the Monte Santo Funicular. Here you will find the Fortress of Castel Sant Elmo, sitting on the highest point in Naples it has magnificent views of the City and Harbour. Naples most famous Cathedral of Saint Gennaro ( the Dumo) can be found on Via Duomo which runs up from the Via Nuova Marina the roadway which travel along the Gulf of Naples. This building houses the relic of Saint Gennaro, which contains two small differently shaped ampoules containing his dried blood, according to tradition prayers before his tomb gave the city salvation from an eruption of Vesuvius. the enormous fame of the feast of Saint Gennaro was mentioned in chronicles as early as 1389, and is due the the fact that the blood liquefies at each anniversary of the feast from as early as the Constantine period. The feast is celebrated each year on the First Saturday of May and the 19th of September. If the feast is not celebrated and the blood does not liquefy, then it is believed that a catastrophe will befall the city. Nightlife can be found around the areas of Piazza Miraglia and Piaza San Domenico. Pompeii was buried after an eruption in 1779 AD, which ended the life of this vibrant and sophisticated city, almost 3 fifths of the area has not been excavated, and many fine buildings of this Roman town are now uncovered for visitors to see, amongst which are the extensive forum, lavish baths and temples and fresco decorated villas. The Isle of Capri. Lies opposite the Sorrento Peninsula, and is divided into two districts, the lower of Capri itself which boasts the quaint villages of Marina Grande, in the Harbour area, and Marina Piccola on the other side of the island; take the cable car from Marina Grande to Capri town itself, where buses depart every 15 minutes from the Via Roma to the town of Anacapri which lies higher up the mountain. To appreciate the the full beauty of the island and its surroundings take the chairlift from Piazza Vittoria up Monte Solaro, if you have time take one of the many hiking trails such as the strenuous hike to the ruins of the villa of Emperor Tiberius.
