Palma City Information Palma is the capital of Mallorca sometimes referred to as Majorca . The largest island in the Balearic chain which includes Menorca and Ibiza all of which sit in the Mediterranean sea south east of Spain. As you arrive by air you will undoubtedly get your first glimpse of one of the "must sees" the wonderful gothic cathedral which was built in the 14th century. Sightseeing There are many interesting points and tourist attractions in Palma and one of the best ways to familiarise yourself with the city is to take a hop on hop off bus tour which allows you to disembark at some fifteen stops around the city for a 24hr period for as many times as you like, buses are every 20 minutes, you can pre book a ticket before you go a see city tours in the side panel concierge services In addition to the cathedral already mentioned the Palace of Almudaina and the Plaza Mayor are definitely worth visiting as is the fish exchange or take a walk on a warm evening along the quays to be found off the Pasaeo Maritimo where many fine private yachts are anchored. Palma cathedral known as La Seu is open weekdays 10am till 5.30pm (Saturdays closing at 1.30pm) If you happen to visit on a Sunday and would like to attend mass which starts at 10.30am your visit will be free. The Pal au de L'Almudaina sits in the shadow of Palma cathedral this Moorish palace has many examples of Islamic and Gothic architecture and it is the chosen venue of the King and Queen of Spain for entertaining open Monday to Friday 10am to 6.30pm Saturdays 10am till 2pm. and it closes from October to March between 2pm and 4pm. Castell de Belver is really a park and museum built over 700 years ago it has been a prison and a mint. The top floor holds a collection of fine sculptures. From April to September it is open from 10am to 7pm and from October to March 10am to 5pm closing in July and August from 2pm to 4pm. Shopping Palma has some wonderful shops many close between 1pm and 4pm but then open until 8.30pm or so in the evening. The most sophisticated shops can be found at the top of Es Born along the Avenida Rey Jaime III here sleek and expensive shops bear testament to a city which has grown rich on tourism. The Mercado opens from 6am to 2.30pm and this is the place to buy general provisions as well as some fine sea food. For traditional Majorcan food and drink take a look at Son Vivot Pl. Porta Pintada 1, nr. the Placa d'Espanya There is a flea marked at C de Mareu Enric Llaso on Saturdays. Nightlife In the evening you will find that many of the bars and restaurants which were open during the days have closed. but the area around the Paseo Maritimo which is known as Es Born and the tree lined central promenade comes alive, in this general area you can find bars clubs and discos to suit all tastes |
