Spring is the time of year when the streets of Saville are filled with processions and parades, as the Calendar of events begins with Holy Week, these celebrations started way back in the 16th Century, when the Passion of Christ (Pasion de Cristo) was commemorated and the religious organisations and lay brotherhoods carried the various floats through the streets.
In present times, during the Holy week, processions and parades which start on Palm Sunday are held in the afternoon and evenings, hundreds of candles light up the floats festivities reach a climax on Good Friday, most of the population line the bridges and older parts of town to watch the procession.
After lent the city once again comes to life with the Feria de Abril when participants dress up in traditional Andalusian peasant costumes to once again celebrate what began as a 19th century revolt against foreign involvement in the affairs of Seville.
During this time Circus performances, bull fights and flamenco shows take place, the fairground streets fill with colourful tents, all lit up with pretty lanterns, During the mornings, horse driven coaches and riders stroll the grounds and from Resurrection Sunday bullfights are celebrated. The Feria is inaugurated at twelve midnight with the ceremonial prueba del alumbrado – lighting of the entry gate
The 30th of May Sevilla celebrates San Fernando Day in honour of the King who conquered the City, and on August 15th Día de la Virgen de Los Reyes (Virgin of the Kings) which is celebrated with a procession using a statue that belonged to King San Fernando.
December the 8th brings Saville alive again with another local Fiesta which celebrates the Immaculate Conception, this evening and for the next week people dance and sine the “Sieses” in the Cathedral, many dressing intraditional blue and white.
Night Time in Seville Nightlife
The fair and balmy night time temperatures generate a lively atmosphere as dusk falls and the City’s nightlife begins, entertainment is plentiful and varied.
The seasons tend to dictate what parts of the city are frequented most, and different places come into their own at various times of the year.
The City centre is most frequented in the last quarter of the year, with bars nightclubs and restaurants all doing a roaring trade, for typical wine bars, try the areas of Arenal and Barrio de Sants. Alfalfa and the Plaza del Salvador are places where larger crowds seem to gather, or for more alternative amusement try the Alameda section of town.
In Triana district you will find an area with character, where along Calle Betis you will find flamenco music bars and bars with more modern music as well. The Vervion area again has lots of pubs and discos to suit all ages.
You will also find other hot spots and clubs on the Isla de Cartuja fairgrounds.
